VoIP Basics
This time let’s discuss some basic information about this new kind of Internet Telephony that is called VoIP.
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP has revolutionized the way many people make long distance calls. If the person you are calling has VoIP technology, you can easily call them, either for a small fee, or for free. Depending on the service you’re using, you can even call a regular phone with VoIP.
VoIP systems translate your voice signals into packets that are sent over Internet connections. This means that to get your VoIP phone to work properly, you’ll need a broadband connection and router. Originally, there was some concern over whether or not the signal could be intercepted, causing security breaches in sensitive calls. However, most modern VoIP systems use encryption to prevent your phone call from being overheard. This means that even businesses with sensitive information to protect can now benefit from VoIP.
Whether or not you pay for your VoIP calls will depend on what you need. If all you want is simple voice transmission, many free chat services provide telephony that will be adequate. However, if you want to make conference calls, or are very worried about security or sound quality, you may prefer to subscribe to a service. VoIP services usually provide things like call logging, and normally charge by the minute. However, you may also be able to find VoIP providers who will give you a standing account without minute limitations. These may be more expensive. The more features you buy, the more your VoIP service will cost.
You can either use VoIP with a headset and microphone, or use an Analog Telephone Adapter, or ATA. This adapter allows you to hook up your existing telephone to the computer, translating your analog signals into data packets. Some people also choose to use VoIP with an IP phone. These telephones look just like regular phones, but plug into the router via an ethernet cable. These phones don’t need to go through the personal computer and let you skip installing special VoIP software. Soon, Wi-Fi VoIP phones are expected to be available, allowing you to carry the phone around the house, just like a standard cordless model.
VoIP phones are great for people who need to make long distance calls from multiple locations where their normal long distance company won’t cover them. People who want to save on their long distance bill can also enjoy the benefits of VoIP. You may be able to check your VoIP voice mail by email, or to attach voice message to your emails, as well. These benefits and features make VoIP technology appealing to many different people. As technology advances, VoIP is quickly changing the way we make phone calls. Soon, conventional telephones may be entirely obsolete.
That’s all for now folks!
